Amalfi, Puglia & Sicily Tour

DAY 1: Thu 3 September 2020


Welcome to Rome. On arrival at Rome’s Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport, there will be one group arrival transfer to take you to the hotel, where the rest of the day is at leisure.

(Note: Those not wishing to join the group arrival transfer will make their own way to the hotel).

DAY 2: Fri 4 September 2020


After a restful night, join your coach and Travel Director and transfer to the Amalfi Coast. Settle into your hotel in Sorrento where the rest of the day is at leisure. This evening, meet your Travel Director for a welcome drink and dinner at a local restaurant. (DW)

Day 3: Sat 5 September 2020


Travel this morning to Pompei. With a Local Expert, explore the streets of Pompeii, buried in AD 79 by the historic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. We return to Sorrento for some free time. (Or an opportunity for an optional tour to Ravello). (B)


Day 4: Sun 6 Sep 2020


A free day for you to enjoy as you wish. Perhaps take an optional excursion to Capri? (B)


Day 5: Mon 7 Sep 2020


Journey along country roads to the ancient town of Matera. Meet with an in-house guide to explore the extraordinary Sassi, a complex of cave dwellings carved into the mountain-side. We then continue onto Alberobello. (B, DW)

Day 6: Tue 8 Sep 2020


A late start today before a walking tour with a Local Expert to admire the Trulli of Alberobello, circular structures with conical roofs, built from limestone and stacked without mortar. There’s some free time to explore before lunch at a local restaurant, and a gelato. Later, travel to nearby Polignano al Mare on the coast for a delicious dinner. (B, LW, DW)

Day 7: Wed 9 Sep 2020


Today we explore the ornate town of Lecce, fondly named the “Florence of the South”, characterised by its abundance of baroque architecture. We stroll along 300 year old cobblestone streets, with a Local Expert and view Piazza del Duomo and visit the Roman amphitheatre dating back to the 2nd century. There’s free time for lunch before returning to Ostuni, with its stark white-washed buildings, narrow cobbled streets and arched stairways, reminiscent of a North African Arab Medina. Perched high above the beautiful sea, the ‘White Town’ is a photographer’s delight. Visit a Mill to taste the renowned olive oil produced in this area that incorporates olives from the ancient groves of Puglia. Return to Alberobello where this evening is free. (B)


Day 8: Thu 10 Sep 2020


The local roads take you south to the coastal town of Vibo Marina. After checking into your hotel, the rest of the afternoon is free for you to relax and enjoy at your leisure, before an included dinner at the hotel. (B, D)

Day 9: Fri 11 Sep 2020


Travel to the very toe of Italy and board your ferry bound for Sicily across the straight of Messina and travel to Capo D’Órlando, our overnight stay. Your evening is free to make the most of this seaside town. (B)

Day 10: Sat 12 Sep 2020


This morning, a short drive brings us to the quaint fishing town of Cefalu. The town’s imposing cathedral was erected to fulfil a vow made by the Norman King Roger II. Stroll down to the medieval stone fountain with your Travel Director and seek out the Gothic arch of the Porta Marina for a picture-perfect view of the little harbour. Afterwards, visit a winery for a tasting of local wine before continuing to Palermo for 3 nights. (B,DW)

Day 11: Sun 13 Sep 2020


Today a tour of the old city with a local guide. Sicily’s capital is teeming with impressive art and ruins, Byzantine buildings and Baroque churches. Learn why there are so many Arab-Norman monuments scattered throughout the city, a legacy of both dynasties ruling in Palermo. Pause for photos outside of Palermo Cathedral, with its elegant Arabic arches and blue-gray Then travel to Monreale where you will visit Monreale Cathedral, considered one of the finest Norman constructions in the world, built as a royal complex in the 12th century. The exterior of the cathedral is rather unassuming, but step inside to be mesmerized by towering arches, glorious golden mosaics and famous artworks. Enjoy some free time before returning to Palermo where this evening is free. (B)


Day 12: Mon 14 Sep 2020


Palermo is rich in incredible and typical street markets where you can discover a wide variety of local tasty foods and fresh organic products and this morning we visit Ballaro markets with a Local Guide. Taste specialties such as arancino, verdure in pastella (battered vegetables), panino panellee crocchè , sfincione (sicilian pizza), cannolo with ricotta cheese or cassata (typical sicilian cake with ricotta cheese). Then to Marsala It’s known for its ancient ruins and fortified Marsala wine. We visit a winery for a tasting before heading back to Palermo where this evening is free. (B)


Day 13: Tue 15 Sep 2020


Head south today and stop in Corleone, made famous in the Godfather films. There’s time to explore before continuing to Agrigento. On arrival join a Local Expert to explore the Valley of the Temples, Sicily’s finest Greek sanctuary. Especially impressive is the massive Temple of Concordia and the clifftop Temple of Juno overlooking the sea. Dinner in a local restaurant this evening. (B,DW)

Day 14: Wed 16 Sep 2020


Travel to Piazza Armerina set in the heart of Sicily. We visit the splendid Villa Romana del Casale, a majestic imperial villa, originally the property of a powerful Roman family. Here you will find the best preserved Roman mosaics in the world and the city is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Taormina, our home for 5 nights. This evening, enjoy a delicious dinner of freshly prepared Farm-to-Table cuisine, accompanied with Italian wines. (B, DW)

Day 15: Thu 17 Sep 2020


This morning, travel to the old town of Taormina, which clings to the side of Mount Tauro overlooking the Ionian Sea and the snowy peak of Mount Etna. With your Local Expert, visit the Greek theatre set on a cliff and open to the sky. Take a moment to sit in this ancient theatre and absorb the view through the crumbling arches to snowy Mount Etna. Stroll on to the tiny courtyard of the Palazzo Corvaja, Taormina’s grandest building and further along the elegant Corso Umberto, the Piazza IX April offers panoramic views. This rest of the day is free (B)


Day 16: Fri 18 Sep 2020


Head south today to nearby Catania and join a Local Expert for an exploration of this bustling port town. See the magnificent Duomo and Piazza and the elegant noble buildings of the Palazzo Senatorio. There’s free time to explore on your own before returning to Taormina. (B)


Day 17: Sat 19 Sep 2020


Explore the region around Mount Etna, Europe’s largest volcano before stopping for lunch & wine tasting at the Gambino Vini (or similar – subject to availability), then onto the quaint town of Linguaglossa to stroll the narrow streets. Late this afternoon, stop in Piedmonte Etneo to experience La Festa Della Vendemmia (Vintage Festival). Return late to your hotel. (B.LW)
